The Spiritual Hierarchy is a term, brought into wider Western usage through the Theosophical tradition, for the innumerable Beings understood to inhabit and serve within the higher dimensions of existence. Some, though not all, are understood to have experienced previous lives on Earth and are sometimes referred to as Ascended Masters. The word “Hierarchy” should not be understood in the earthly sense of authority or command: these Beings do not seek to instruct or direct humanity, but to offer guidance and assistance while respecting human free will.
Throughout human history, the Spiritual Hierarchy has provided guidance and assistance for humanity’s spiritual evolution. This influence has taken many forms, working through spiritual teachers and traditions, inspired individuals, inner guidance and the gradual expansion of human consciousness.
During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, teachings concerning the Spiritual Hierarchy began to be presented more openly in the West. Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, co-founder of the Theosophical Society in 1875, wrote of advanced spiritual beings often referred to as Masters or Mahatmas, describing them as custodians of spiritual wisdom who worked behind the scenes for the development of humanity. In the early twentieth century, Alice Bailey expanded considerably upon this understanding, presenting detailed teachings concerning the structure and purpose of the Spiritual Hierarchy, its Ashrams and its relationship with humanity. Her writings also introduced the concept of the Externalisation of the Hierarchy — the gradual emergence of what had previously operated largely from the inner spiritual realms into a more direct and recognizable relationship with humanity. These teachings formed an important historical bridge between older esoteric traditions and the more open exploration of the Spiritual Hierarchy that continues today.
Today, we understand the Spiritual Hierarchy to be playing a significant role in an accelerating spiritual awakening across humanity. Over recent years there has been an enormous growth in people reporting awakenings and profound changes in consciousness. Many also describe heightened sensitivity, amplified emotions, periods of disorientation and unusual energetic experiences. Within the spiritual community these experiences are often referred to collectively as “Ascension symptoms” and are understood by many as part of a wider transformation of human consciousness.
Alongside this awakening, people from many different spiritual traditions are reporting increasingly direct forms of inner communication, guidance and transmission attributed to higher spiritual sources. What was once experienced primarily through individual mystics, spiritual teachers and initiates appears increasingly to be occurring through a much wider and more diverse group of people.
From this perspective, humanity’s relationship with the Spiritual Hierarchy is not something belonging only to the distant past. It is an evolving relationship — one in which guidance that has traditionally operated from the higher dimensions is becoming increasingly accessible to those whose consciousness has become receptive to it.
